Why should I use Activated Coconut Carbon in my filtered pipe?

This is high-activity, granular-activated carbon which is made from selected virgin grades of coconut shell.

To achieve its “activated carbon form,” the shell undergoes a 2000° steam activation process creating millions of pores and increasing the total surface area. Just 1 gram of activated carbon equals 5,381 square feet of surface area. A standard NFL field has 57,554 square feet of surface area … so about 10% of that area is in 1 gram of carbon.

The granular shape maximizes its geometric, microporous surface, significantly increasing surface area and thereby increasing its effectiveness with the short contact time of smoke. As the smoke passes through our activated coconut carbon, tars and carcinogens are trapped in the microscopic pores.

The result is a remarkably smooth, cleaner smoking experience.

How much Activated Coconut Carbon should I use in my filtered pipe?

Fill the carbon filter chamber approximately 80% full.

How frequently should I change the Activated Coconut Carbon in my filtered pipe?

This is personal preference, but we recommend after every 100 inhalations, when it affects your draw, or if there’s a noticeable build-up of creosote and tar.

Why can’t I use industrial or aquarium carbon in the filter?

No regulations are placed on carbon that is imported into the United States nor has it gone through lab testing to measure its effectiveness. Packaging typically states the necessity of washing thoroughly to reduce dust. This carbon is usually smaller in diameter and can pass through the filter percs into your water. As the carbon soaks in your water, the impurities are released and then inhaled, which is not healthy.

I’ve noticed black dust in the Activated Coconut Carbon packaging. Is that a health concern?

We receive our Coconut Carbon from our vendor and pre-rinse it to remove dust generated from friction as it traveled to us; that would happen again as it is shipped to the customer. We recommend another rinse to minimize any dust. If you’re using our triple-filtered products, the added cycle of the inhalation through organic cotton can help mitigate concerns about remaining carbon dust.
