This FAQ should help you decide whether you need filtration – including any part of our triple-filtration system – for your health and increased enjoyment of your medicine.
Cotton, a natural fiber, has been grown worldwide for a thousand years and accounts for 50% of the entire world’s fiber consumption. To meet this high demand, conventional cotton is grown using pesticides, genetic engineering, and toxic chemicals in everything from seeding, weeding, and insect-control, to harvesting and production.
There are 9 toxic pesticides–most known carcinogens–that are used in growing cotton, and approximately 25% of insecticide consumption worldwide is from cotton production.
We built our filtration system to protect you from toxins and pesticides. We recommend–and strongly advise–that you use only Organic Cotton in our pipes.
Cotton that is grown using organic agriculture, which is a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems, and people.
Organic cotton is grown from non-GMO seeds using a system of crop rotation, organic fertilization, and natural defoliation, and is free of harsh whitening agents or dyes.
We include this information in our instruction sheets that come with each pipe as it’s important that the cotton doesn’t restrict your draw. Our cotton should be separated–grab a tab of cotton and unravel it like a bale of hay–and fluffed before pulling off just a small amount.
Since only a small amount is required, it will get brown fast and should be changed frequently.
This is personal preference, but organic cotton should be changed when it browns. Since it is one of the primary filters of toxins and smoke byproducts, you should consider changing it more frequently than not.
